The White Garden

Set against the warm tones of a Cheshire brick barn, the garden was conceived as a calm and considered extension of the building — a space shaped as much by atmosphere as by function.

Rather than remaining as a single open expanse, the layout was carefully organised into a sequence of connected spaces. Close to the house, a more intimate terrace provides a setting for relaxed dining, while beyond, the garden opens into a looser arrangement of seating areas, allowing for both gathering and quiet retreat.

A restrained material palette of clay pavers, soft-toned stone, and green oak was selected to sit comfortably within the character of the barn. These elements establish a strong underlying structure, while remaining deliberately understated, allowing the garden to feel settled and cohesive within its rural context.

Planting is intentionally limited in palette, built around white flowers and layered green foliage. This approach brings a sense of calm and clarity, while allowing texture, light, and seasonal variation to define the experience of the space. Structural planting anchors the scheme, with softer layers introducing movement and a more relaxed character.

A timber pergola forms a quiet focal point within the garden, providing both enclosure and definition, while framing views through the space and reinforcing the sense of progression from one area to the next.

The result is a garden that feels composed and easy to inhabit — supporting both everyday use and informal entertaining — while remaining closely connected to the architecture and landscape that surround it.
